Quilt Zone Class Sale Winter 2017

Winter is here, but the days are getting longer so it’s not to worry. The Quilt Zone classes are here to give you something calming to work on while the snow flies and you dream of summer gardens. There are some new classes: Jan is teaching a “Make and Take” series that features fast to make projects that are usable and givable (as in handmade gifts). These are fairly simple projects that you should be able to finish in an hour or two. And you get some expert advice on how to do things like sew in zippers, or make buttonholes or work with vinyl mesh. Check the class listings for the details on each project. Peg and Mary Kay each have beautiful quilts made with traditional blocks hanging in the store. They will give you some tips and techniques to make the blocks easier and I can’t think of a better way to spend winter days than playing with fabric and piecing these blocks. Maria Shell is doing two workshops for us; these are all day classes that give you lots of time to work with a nationally known local talent. And you will notice that we are repeating several of our most popular classes. (But NOT Tuffets – Mary Kay is Tuffeted out). Quilt Zone classes are small – we keep them at a maximum of 8 students (9 if you beg really hard and the teacher doesn’t have to sit down). This gives you a lot of individual time with the teacher and gives you more room to sew. But this often means our classes fill up and we have to turn away interested quilters. When that happens we repeat the class. Some of the repeat classes are specific requests from customers. If there is ever anything you have seen in the Quilt Zone that you would like taught be sure and ask us. All the details and pictures of most of the projects are on our website www.alaskaquiltzone.com . But, as always, the best way to see and appreciate the projects is live in the Quilt Zone.

The class sale is on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8. On these days the class fees will be discounted 20%. You may sign up early for a class starting now – this will guarantee a spot in a class that might fill before the sale date. Remember that class supplies are always discounted 15%.

It’s time for us to count the Quilt Zone inventory – the fewer the bolts, the easier it is. So starting now through January 8 the end of bolt discount is 30%. Purchase all the fabric left on any bolt and get a 30% discount on that piece of fabric.

Happy Shopping!

January 2017 Classes

Choosing Fabrics Lecture

All Levels -- Diana Bradley -- $15
Start the New Year with new ideas for combining fabrics. Some people call this the color class, but there is so much more to choosing fabric than color. Maybe color is the least important characteristic. Value and texture, that’s where the power is. This lecture class is loaded with examples and structured to help you see fabric as a design tool, to be used for effect. Learn to see color, and look beyond it to the other fabric characteristics -value and texture.
Sunday, January 15, 1 to 5pm

Black Tie

Beginner plus -- Diana Bradley -- $35
We did this pattern as a mystery quilt when we first opened the Quilt Zone. Big squares, little squares and some half square triangles. Diana did the quilt in black and white with hot blue as the accent for a kind of modern look. But it looks great in batiks and traditional country colors as well. Pattern is provided in class.

Kaleidoscope

Beginner Plus -- Diana Bradley -- $35
With the proper use of value, kaleidoscope quilts give you the illusion of circles without piecing circles. It’s all in how you arrange the fabric and Diana loves to play with value in fabric. Raven Magic

Beginner Plus -- Jan Sant -- $35
This small wall hanging is great for using scraps. You can make it dark and more realistic like the sample, or white and artistic, or put some whimsy and fun into it and make your ravens paisley and plaid. This class teaches the faced appliqué method to prepare the appliqué pieces. Then you can sew the pieces on by hand or machine – Jan will show you both methods.
Sunday, April 2 and 16, 1 to 4pm

----------------------------------

Freezer Paper Technique

Beginner Plus -- Diana Bradley -- $30
This is a kind of foundation piecing. It’s like paper piecing, except you don’t sew through the paper so there is no paper to rip off afterwards. And the pattern is on the top and the back of the paper so there is no guessing where to line things up. And you can use a normal stitch length so if you make a mistake you can use a seam ripper and take it out no problem. Diana coverts all traditional paper piecing to this freezer paper method because it is easier and she HATES pulling out all those little bits of paper. She can convert you too.
Saturday, April 22, 1 to 4pm

----------------------------------

Bindings/Facings

Beginner Plus -- Linda Postlethwait -- $30
Learn binding and facing other than your basic binding to finish your quilt edges. Linda will cover pillowcase binding, backing fabric binding, French facing, two color binding, 4-sided binding, facing binding, flange binding and even more. You will have samples to take with you at the end of your class.
